For over 20 years Unifor members and activists have been actively engaged in struggles for social and legal equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, intersex[1], two-spirited[2] and trans people. The movement for LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer) rights in Canada has accomplished an enormous amount in a relatively short time. Unions have played a fundamental role in Canada becoming a leader on LGBTQ equality rights – both in terms of bargaining equality measures (same sex benefits, pensions, anti-harassment and anti-discrimination language) and in terms of pushing forward progressive legislative change through protest, public campaigns, court challenges and intense lobbying.

[1] “Intersex” is a general term used for a variety of conditions in which a person is born with a reproductive or sexual anatomy that is atypical of definitions of female or male.
[2] Used as an umbrella term by some indigenous communities to describe people whose are gender-variant, and/or have both masculine and feminine spirits.
