Unifor: Ontario's Hudak no leader at all

Unifor condemns Tim Hudak’s proposal to contract out government services to the lowest bidder as reckless.

“The people of Ontario need reliable public services that are delivered with their needs put first, not corporate profit,” says Unifor National President, Jerry Dias.

“Tim Hudak is a reckless politician with no vision and no understanding of Ontarians’ real lives and real needs. Tim Hudak is no leader at all,” asserts Dias. “When someone in Ontario needs the help of the OPP, they should not be rooting through their yellow pages or having to make a business case to justify their call for help,” says Dias.

“Do Ontarians want professional teachers writing the curriculum for our kids’ schools or third party contractors?” asks Dias.

Yesterday Tim Hudak proposed a sweeping plan to contract out government services and force public sector unions to compete with private companies to see who can do the work at the lowest cost.

“Of course we want our public services delivered in an efficient, cost-effective manner – but we also want those services delivered with the needs and interest of the public put first – and that cannot happen in an environment in which profit is the primary goal,” says Dias.

“Put simply, public services cannot be delivered by lowest bidder, they must be delivered by those whose primary purpose is to serve the public interest, that is, those whose primary goals is to help Ontarians live the best lives they can,” says Dias.

“Mr. Hudak’s vision of Ontario is one in which public services are profit-driven, rather than driven by the needs of Ontarians and in which workers have no rights – and families and communities suffer as a result. Ontario deserves a leader with a vision of a prosperous and thriving Ontario. Ontario deserves a leader who brings us together to build a province in which we can all thrive. Hudak has none of this. He is no leader at all,” says Dias.
