Crowds gathered in cities across Canada to mark International Women’s Day on March 8. Trade unionists, feminists, activists and other community leaders stood firm in their commitment to stand up for women’s rights – the right to have a union, the right to equal pay, reproductive rights, the right to good jobs which includes affordable childcare and a world safe from violence.

In Halifax, Atlantic Regional Director Lana Payne spoke about the importance of labour unions in the fight for women’s rights. Member of Parliament for Halifax Megan Leslie spoke of the missing and murdered Aboriginal women, including Loretta Saunders, and the urgent need for a national inquiry.

In Toronto, thousands gathered to protest the low-wage economy supported by many local and federal politicians. The crowd marched through the city streets calling for equality, justice and political action.

Every day, every week and every year to come, our actions are building a more equal world.
