TORONTO- Unifor members at a Loblaws warehouse in Ajax, Ontario voted 98% in favour of strike action during ongoing negotiations with the company.
“Members at the Loblaws warehouse work under high-stress, time-sensitive conditions to deliver goods to customers and stores across the province,” said Jerry Dias, Unifor National President. “This strike mandate is a united show of support for the bargaining committee in their negotiations with this corporate Goliath.”
Approximately 1000 members work at the Loblaws Ajax Distribution Centre, and are represented by Unifor Local 222. The vote was held at a unit meeting on Wednesday, January 23, 2019. The current collective agreement expires on February 9.
“Our jobs the distribution centre support hundreds of families across the Durham Region,” said Colin James, President of Local 222. “The public has heard horror stories about working conditions in warehouses in recent months, but know this- Local 222 members will not allow their working conditions to be eroded.”
Members are advocating for respect in the workplace, establishing a pension, and against increased precarity in their jobs. Loblaws is notorious for its promotion of low-wage, part-time and precarious work for front-line staff in Canada, while top executives rake in millions each year. This includes CEO Galen Weston who took home more than $6 million in earnings in 2017.
