On February 28, Unifor submitted an intervention to the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) regarding Rogers Broadcasting Limited’s television license renewal application.
Unifor represents approximately 550 Rogers employees at the company’s English-language City TV stations as well as at Rogers Sportsnet and The Shopping Channel. Unifor also represents Rogers employees working at various OMNI ethnic television stations in Ontario and British Columbia.
The union had filed an official complaint with the CRTC following the sudden announcement of OMNI job and program cuts in the summer of 2013. In its ruling on the matter, the Commission committed to closely monitor the impact of the cuts on OMNI programming and required Rogers to file an early application for the station’s renewal.
In its application, Rogers requested significant changes to its Conditions of License that, in Unifor’s opinion, threatens the future of inclusive and quality ethnic programming in Canada.
