Workers at the Les Crustacés de Gaspé processing plant in Grande-Rivière, Québec voted to become members of Unifor. This was the result of Unifor's recently-launched recruitment campaign in the fisheries and processing sector.
"This is a sector that our union is well-acquainted with as we represent thousands of members on the West Coast, in the Maritimes, and on Lake Erie,” said Renaud Gagné, Unifor’s Québec Director. “We have expertise and we expect these 75 workers to see significant gains by joining the union.”
For several weeks now, Unifor has started a recruitment campaign in the fishing sector in Gaspésie. This vote is one of the first results of this campaign, while other approaches are also underway in different workplaces.
Unifor represents members working in the fisheries sector on the west coast, in the Maritimes, and on Lake Erie. Given the uncertain and seasonal nature of the industry, the number of members can fluctuate significantly. Unifor also represents members who work in fish processing plants and fishing companies in Quebec and Ontario. In total, several thousand fishery workers are members of Unifor.
