Local Union Task Force is inspiring, Lewenza tells trades conference

Retired CAW National President Ken Lewenza regaled delegates at the Skilled Trades Conference with stories from the Local Union Task Force, currently underway as Unifor approaches its third anniversary.

Lewenza said, “I have learned so much during the last ten months with this task force; this great privilege has been an inspiration.”

Unifor’s formation presented an opportunity to do things differently by bringing workers together from private and public sectors. In Lewenza’s words, the task force is an important dialogue that provides members an opportunity to give direct feedback. It is premised on the recognition that times have changed for unions and the labour movement, and the way to do better starts with engaging members on how to build a stronger union.

Delegates at the conference were encouraged to attend upcoming task force meetings.

“Through friendship, comradeship and in sharing ideas about our union all of us can be inspired to fight another day,” Lewenza said.

Task force meetings will wrap up by the end of April, and a report with recommendations will be submitted to the Constitutional Convention in August.
