In an inspiring keynote address to Unifor’s BC Regional Council, BC Federation of Labour President Jim Sinclair drew clear lines in the battle for good jobs and good benefits, making it clear that working people have a lot invested in the success of the labour movement.

“It is important if we’re going to be successful to stand with faith groups, LGBT groups, and other organizations demanding justice,” Sinclair said February 8.

He used the example of the shameful behavior of Cadillac Fairview in its dispute with cleaners (Local 3000) to illustrate the vital role of Unifor in defending the basic rights of vulnerable workers.

The workers, earning $12.50 an hour, lost their jobs to cleaners earning minimum wage after Cadillac Fairview switched contractors.

Sinclair also emphasized that Unifor is on the right path with its political positions on energy and forestry.

“Good jobs are not in contradiction to taking care of the environment,” he said.
Sinclair ended by reminding Unifor activists that nothing in our collective agreements was gained without a fight.
