James Dorsey, the arbitrator tasked with Bill 1, found that the government’s objectives of streamlined bargaining and four province-wide bargaining units could be achieved through the creation of a collaborative, amalgamated bargaining agent. This supports Unifor’s position throughout arbitration.
The 200-page decision leaves the door open for more collaboration between the unions, and the arbitrator was fair in offering a big compromise between the unions and the government. To read the complete decision click here.
“We have more work to do and we look forward to working with the other health care unions and Mr. Dorsey to achieve the proposal he has laid out so that Unifor members can remain Unifor members,” said Lana Payne, Atlantic Regional Director.
Mr. Dorsey has also said the matter of LPNs (Unifor represents about 500 of them) will also be dealt with in arbitration hearings scheduled to resume February 2.
Unifor’s members were active and vocal about their opposition to Bill 1. Their commitment to their union and to protecting their rights was an act of inspiration and dedication. Mr. Dorsey’s decision allows us to create a structure that meets the needs of our members while protecting their Constitutional rights, said Payne.
